About

Join the Calgary Chamber and Calgary Counselling Centre on October 6 for One Step Better: National Depression Screening Day, an important conversation about mental health, addiction, recovery and hope.

The event will feature a keynote from Scott Oake, one of Canada’s most recognizable and respected broadcasters, with more than 40 years covering the NHL, Olympic Games, Grey Cup Championships and other major sporting events. Beyond his distinguished broadcasting career, Scott has become a powerful voice on addiction, mental health, resilience and recovery. Following the loss of his son Bruce to substance use disorder in 2011, Scott and his wife Anne turned their grief into action, establishing the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre and championing recovery-focused supports for individuals and families.

Following the keynote, Scott will join us for a fireside chat exploring mental health, addiction and the workplace, including the importance of breaking down stigma and creating supportive environments where people feel comfortable asking for help.

Join us for a powerful and hopeful conversation that will challenge perspectives, inspire compassion and leave you with a greater understanding of how we can support ourselves, our colleagues and our communities.

Keynote Speaker

Scott Oake

Bruce Oake Recovery Centre

For more than four decades, Scott Oake has been one of Canada’s most respected broadcasters, trusted voices, and storytellers. Known to millions through Hockey Night in Canada, the Olympic Games, CFL, NHL, and countless major sporting events, Scott has built a career founded on authenticity, compassion, and the ability to connect with audiences.

Today, however, Scott believes his most important work happens away from the broadcast desk.

Following the heartbreaking loss of his son Bruce to addiction in 2011, Scott and his wife Anne transformed unimaginable grief into hope. Together they founded the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre in Winnipeg, one of Canada’s leading long-term residential addiction recovery centres for men. Building on that success, they are now leading the development of the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre, an innovative facility that will allow women to receive life-changing addiction treatment without being separated from their children.

Scott’s personal journey is captured in his national bestselling memoir, For the Love of a Son, a deeply moving account of family, addiction, loss, resilience, forgiveness, and hope.

Whether speaking to corporate audiences, healthcare professionals, educators, community organizations, government leaders, or fundraising events, Scott leaves audiences with a powerful reminder that addiction does not discriminate, recovery is possible, and every family deserves hope.

His presentations combine heartfelt storytelling, humour, honesty, and practical insight, creating an unforgettable experience that continues to resonate long after the event concludes.
