For many Calgarians, sport is more than just competition. It is a gateway to confidence, connection and community. At the centre of that experience is Sport Calgary, an organization working behind the scenes to make participation possible for more people across the city.
In 2025, that work was recognized with the RBC Inclusion Award at the Calgary Small Business Awards, highlighting Sport Calgary’s ongoing commitment to breaking down barriers and expanding access to sport.
“Receiving the RBC Inclusion Award in 2025 was a meaningful recognition for our team and the many partners we work with across Calgary’s sport community. Inclusion is a core value for Sport Calgary, and much of our work focuses on removing barriers so more people can experience sport,” said Tanis Ursulak, Manager of External Affairs.
Tanis has been with Sport Calgary for nearly three years, bringing a steady passion for building partnerships that make sport more accessible across the city. A lifelong multi-sport athlete and proud sport mom, she often reflects on how sport continues to shape both her work and her perspective on community connection.
From citywide vision to community impact
Founded in 2001, Sport Calgary was created to serve as the municipal sport council for the city, bringing together various organizations under a shared vision.
“The goal was to bring sport organizations together, advocate for sport at the municipal level and help ensure Calgarians of all ages and abilities have opportunities to participate in sport,” said Tanis.
That vision has evolved into a wide range of initiatives designed to meet people where they are. Programs like All Sport One Day introduce children to new activities at no cost, while All Sport One Community brings opportunities directly into neighbourhoods that may face barriers to participation. Events like All Sport One City and the Winter Festival create space for adults and families to try something new, reinforcing the idea that sport is for everyone, at any stage of life.
Sport Calgary is also helping shape national conversations. Through its partnership to host the Sport for Life Summit 2026, the organization is contributing to broader efforts to improve quality sport and physical literacy across Canada.
“By hosting this event, Sport Calgary is helping to elevate inclusive sport systems, ensuring programs are accessible, welcoming and responsive to participants of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, while reducing barriers and creating more equitable opportunities for everyone to get involved in sport,” Tanis said.
Driven by purpose and people
For Tanis, the impact of this work is what makes it meaningful.
“Sport has a unique ability to bring people together, build confidence and create a sense of belonging. Being able to work in a role that connects organizations, partners and communities through sport is incredibly rewarding,” she said.
She sees that impact play out every day in the community. “Whether it’s a young person trying a sport for the first time, a newcomer family finding community through physical activity or adults rediscovering sport later in life, those moments remind me why this work matters. Sport can truly change lives, and being part of helping create those opportunities is what inspires me every day.”
That sense of shared purpose extends beyond the organization itself. Small businesses, Tanis notes, are essential to keeping community sport thriving.
“Small businesses are more than just local retailers, fitness studios or physiotherapy clinics; they are essential partners in keeping community sport alive. Through sponsorships, partnerships, and in-kind support, these businesses help non-profits like Sport Calgary deliver programs, host events, and create opportunities for athletes of all ages.”
Shaping the future of sport in the city
As Calgary continues to grow, so does the opportunity to strengthen its sport system. Sport Calgary is focused on deepening partnerships and expanding access, particularly for communities that have historically been underrepresented.
Looking ahead, the ambition is even broader. “[In ten years], I believe Sport Calgary will play an even greater leadership role in shaping the future of sport in the city, including supporting sport infrastructure planning, advancing inclusive sport policies and helping ensure Calgary remains one of Canada’s leading sport cities. Our long-term vision is a city where sport is accessible and welcoming for everyone.” said Tanis.
