Mental Health Monday: Supporting Founders and Small Business Owners
At Mental Health Monday: Supporting founders and small business owners, co-facilitators Sarah Mateshaytis (Collectively Tangled) and Jade Alberts (Peer Guidance) led a thoughtful conversation about maintaining well-being while running a business. Presented in partnership with our Mental Health Pillar Partner, Cenovus, the session provided practical strategies and space for open dialogue about the realities of entrepreneurship—reminding us that strong businesses start with healthy leaders.
Business After Hours: Small Business Week Kickoff
Small Business Week launched with high energy at the TELUS Spark Science Centre during our Business After Hours: Small Business Week Kickoff! From rides on Ro5ie the Robot to science activations and an incredibly fun AI photo booth from Opuluxe Booths, the evening was full of curiosity, creativity and connection.
Entrepreneurs, innovators and community leaders came together to spark ideas, share experiences and celebrate the incredible small businesses driving Calgary’s growth and resilience. This kickoff set the perfect tone for a week dedicated to recognizing the bold spirit and big impact of our city’s small business community.
Failing Forward
Failure often paves the way to success, and that theme took centre stage at Failing Forward where local entrepreneurs shared honest and inspiring stories of resilience and growth. Moderated by Ian Macdonald, Business & Innovation Leader at KPMG, the conversation featured Nic Beique (Helcim), Mitch Jacobsen (Rviita) and Stephanie Kochorek (Daughter Creative). Attendees gained practical insights on navigating setbacks, embracing adaptability and turning challenges into opportunities, lessons that resonate deeply with every business owner.
Empowering Indigenous Entrepreneurs
Empowering Indigenous Entrepreneurs brought together accomplished leaders including Jo Williams Goodon (Not Your Average Jo Communications, Hip Image), Wade Kerr (BDC), James McInnes (Prompty) and Bryce Starlight (Taza Development Corp.), moderated by Monique Fry (Sustainative Inc.). Hosted at the beautiful Rogers Barlow Campus, the evening sparked meaningful conversation and connection as attendees networked with peers and leaders championing Indigenous entrepreneurship. The powerful discussion explored the opportunities and barriers shaping Indigenous-owned businesses today, emphasizing how cultural identity, innovation and community continue to drive inclusive economic growth.
Calgary Small Business Awards Gala
The week concluded with the Calgary Small Business Awards Gala, presented by Rogers Business, our Small Business Pillar Partner. It was a night to honour the outstanding entrepreneurs and innovators who continue to make Calgary a vibrant place to live, thrive and do business. Hosted by Melanie McDonald of the Calgary Chamber and Ian MacDonald of KPMG, the evening featured remarks from President & CEO Deborah Yedlin, The Hon. Joseph Schow and Mayor-Elect Jeromy Farkas, and celebrated eight remarkable award winners.
