“The Calgary Chamber of Commerce welcomes today’s announcement highlighting significant progress on the Canada-Alberta MOU, including commitments related to the industrial carbon price, the Pathways carbon capture and storage project and the advancement of a bitumen pipeline to the west coast. From where the energy sector stood just a year ago, there has been meaningful progress made to translate commitments into policy action and advance the goal of becoming an energy superpower, and we are pleased to see both governments working persistently toward this goal.
“Specifically, the phased increases in the industrial carbon price, beginning at $95 this year and rising to an effective price of $130 by 2040, provide producers with greater ability to adapt over time, alongside the commitment to advance emissions reductions through a staged approach. With national demand for electricity rising, we are also pleased to see the inclusion of natural gas in the National Electricity Strategy that will help double Canada’s grid capacity. Together, these components reflect Alberta and Ottawa’s commitment to unlocking the potential of Canada’s energy sector and setting the conditions necessary to advance a pipeline. We are particularly pleased to see clear timelines, with final submission on the west coast bitumen pipeline to the Major Projects Office by July 1, designation by the Government of Canada of the proposal as a project of national interest by October 1 and construction commencement by Fall 2027, demonstrating increased urgency to ensure Canada can meet the moment before us.
“Moving forward, we strongly encourage governments to prioritize competitiveness and policy durability, thereby providing producers and investors with the certainty needed to unlock investment capital and increase production. In a rapidly changing and unpredictable global economy, execution of this agreement is of the utmost importance, and we encourage Alberta, Ottawa and industry to continue to work together to ensure effective implementation.
“Finally, we applaud both the provincial and federal governments for their ongoing commitment to the MOU. The agreement is a tangible example of what can be achieved when both parties come together and negotiate in the best interests of Albertans and Canadians, demonstrating that federalism can work. Alberta’s and Canada’s long-term economic growth depends on our ability to work together – and this MOU is a strong example of that collaboration in action.”
