“The Calgary Chamber of Commerce is raising concerns about the state of City assets, with 11 per cent of capital infrastructure deemed to be in poor or very poor condition, with the associated risk rating rising to the ‘extensive’ category. Calgary’s population has expanded significantly over the past five years, placing increased strain on our capital infrastructure, as we see reflected in this report. This infrastructure – including water systems, IT infrastructure, buildings, bridges and roads – constitutes essential services that residents and businesses depend on daily, establishing the baseline conditions necessary for community well-being and economic activity. Their reliability is fundamental to business operations and long-term growth, as well as maintaining Calgary’s economic competitiveness and quality of life.
“In an already challenging cost environment for residents and businesses, we encourage City Hall to explore new funding mechanisms, such as municipal bonds or collaboration with provincial and federal governments, to repair and modernize infrastructure without passing the cost onto Calgarians through higher property taxes or continuing to utilize reserves. Prioritizing this investment is critical for the success of both businesses and citizens today and will ensure these essential systems are robust and reliable for future generations.”
