When “busy” gets in the way of feeling well

This article reflects perspectives from Calgary‑area Chambers Plan advisors Derek Stamp, Garry Peters, Darin Fauth, and Dustin Stirling.

Running a business has a way of quietly reshaping your habits. Lunch becomes whatever you can eat one‑handed. Movement gets squeezed out by meetings. Stress creeps in and stays. Over time, weight changes show up, often without a clear starting point or a simple fix.

For many entrepreneurs and business owners, weight isn’t about vanity. It’s about energy, focus, joint pain, sleep, and managing health risks that didn’t feel urgent ten years ago. And while most people know what they’re “supposed” to do, knowing and doing are two very different things when life is full.

Weight management is rarely a standalone issue. It’s tied to mental wellbeing, physical activity, nutrition, chronic conditions, and stress, all at once. That’s why more modern approaches are shifting away from quick fixes and toward long‑term, sustainable changes that fit real life. As advisor Derek Stamp often tells business owners, “Most people don’t need another lecture on willpower. They need support that understands how busy life actually is.”

Through Chambers Plan, members and their employees have access to Teladoc Health Canada’s Weight Management Program, included as part of the existing Expert Medical Opinion service. Participants start with a comprehensive intake that looks at medical history, lifestyle, and goals, giving clinicians a full picture. From there, a multidisciplinary clinical team develops a personalized wellness plan that covers nutrition, physical activity, and mental health, supported by ongoing virtual coaching.

Rather than navigating this alone, each person works with a registered nurse case manager who provides follow‑up, accountability, and adjustments along the way. As advisor Garry Peters puts it, “Structured, professional guidance that adapts as life changes is often what turns good intentions into real progress.”

This isn’t just an individual issue. Weight‑related health challenges can mean reduced energy, more sick days, and a higher risk of chronic conditions that affect day‑to‑day operations and long‑term costs. Teladoc’s focus on sustainable improvement aims to help people feel better, stay present, and maintain changes over time. “Healthy employees don’t just show up, they show up stronger,” says advisor Daren Fauth. “That support shows up in how they work, lead, and engage.”

Because care is virtual, employees can connect through the Teladoc Health app or online portal, making it easier to participate without extra travel or wait times. They’re also encouraged to share their plan with their primary care provider so everything aligns with their broader healthcare needs. Advisor Dustin Stirling often sums it up this way: “For many people, the biggest barrier isn’t motivation, it’s logistics. Virtual access removes a lot of that friction.”

Even if you never use the program, the real takeaway is that lasting change comes from personalized support, medical insight, and follow‑up that fits real life.
