Calgary, AB, January 26, 2026 – With Parliament resuming at a time of heightened uncertainty for Canada’s economy, Calgary’s business community is calling on the federal government to accelerate efforts aimed at leveraging our strengths as a resource-based economy, diversifying our markets, increasing competitiveness and making sure Canada is an attractive destination for foreign investment.
In the face of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, fundamental shifts in the global trading order and the ongoing threat of tariffs, timely implementation of key initiatives – including those outlined in the Alberta–Ottawa MOU – will be essential to strengthen business confidence, increase investment and provide economic stability.
“Measures such as the One Canadian Economy Act, the Major Projects Office, Budget 2025, the Alberta–Ottawa MOU and 13 new trade agreements demonstrate a clear understanding of Canada’s economic potential and the direction the country must take,” says Deborah Yedlin, President & CEO at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “However, despite recent progress, businesses are facing unparalleled levels of uncertainty, reflected in declining levels of optimism and investment.”
To improve productivity and business competitiveness, we are calling on Parliament to remain focused on:
- Implementing the commitments outlined in the Alberta–Ottawa MOU
- Accelerating major projects
- Streamlining regulatory processes and reducing regulatory burdens
- Strengthening supply chain and trade infrastructure
- Continuing to remove interprovincial trade barriers
- Attracting foreign direct investment
- Offsetting the uncertainty of CUSMA with initiatives that diversify markets and increase Canadian competitiveness
“To position businesses for success in the year ahead, Parliament must work collaboratively, building on the foundations laid in 2025 and delivering tangible outcomes that restore confidence and drive long-term competitiveness,” adds Yedlin. “Now is the time to move to implementation, delivering the certainty businesses need to compete in an increasingly volatile global economy.”
