“The Calgary Chamber of Commerce applauds Canada’s agreement with China to significantly reduce canola seed tariffs from 84 per cent to 15 per cent and to eliminate tariffs on canola meal by March 1, in exchange for up to 49,000 EV imports from China. With canola being the second-most produced crop in Canada, this agreement comes at a pivotal moment for Canadian farmers, providing much-needed certainty ahead of the spring planting season. We are pleased the federal government has given equal consideration to the needs of both canola producers and automakers, ensuring that no single industry is used as a bargaining chip for another.
“We also welcome the memorandum of understanding on economic cooperation signed by Canada and China to increase energy exports and open new investment opportunities for Alberta’s energy sector. At a time of geopolitical uncertainty, this initial agreement is an important signal to the energy sector, providing confidence to increase production and support the building of additional transportation infrastructure to the West Coast. We encourage the federal government to build on these developments and continue diversifying trade with global partners to support the long-term economic prosperity of businesses and all Canadians.”
