On June 10, 2019 businesses in Calgary finally got some encouraging news after an unprecedented public display of frustration by Calgary business leaders and business advocacy groups like the Calgary Chamber. City Council passed a motion that would provide tax relief for non-residential properties. The strategy adopted by council is a familiar one:
The Calgary Chamber, for 128 years, has been an advocate for the business community at all levels of government. Government decision making, at all levels, has a significant impact on a business’s strategic plan, financial profile and overall viability. Government policy can make or break a business, which, in turn, can make or break a family. Because as we all know, vibrant businesses create vibrant communities and households.
Over the past several months, the Calgary Chamber has advocated strongly for structural changes that would bring more fairness for businesses carrying a disproportionate amount of property tax burden.
Statement from Calgary Chamber President and CEO, Sandip Lalli, on City Council’s work to respond to the Downtown Tax Shift.
We all must commit to creating a business community that nourishes, powers and inspires the world.
The time for tinkering is over. While we appreciate that transferring taxes onto homeowners may be politically difficult for City Council, we understand that there may be some measures that can be taken to reduce increases on residents. The alternative is a further erosion of business competitiveness in Calgary and household vibrancy. The business community is looking for meaningful actions from the City to address the issue in the short, medium and long-term.
Economy weighing heavily on the minds of local business community
Significant support for Calgary business was announced on March 19, 2018 as City Council approved property tax relief for businesses facing increases due to the re-distributive effect of the 2018 assessment process.
