Calgary Chamber welcomes launch of federal Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program

The following statement is attributable to Deborah Yedlin, President & CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce:

"Today marks a milestone for economic reconciliation in Canada, with the launch of the federal Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program. First announced in Budget 2024, this program is a gamechanger in breaking down the historic barriers to economic participation for Indigenous communities across the nation, supporting access to meaningful opportunities in the resource sector coast-to-coast-coast, including forestry, critical minerals, energy and more.

"The Calgary Chamber has long advocated for this policy, recognizing that access to capital is key to economic reconciliation and meaningful Indigenous participation in Canada’s economy.

"Indigenous communities are leaders in building more sustainable and resilient economies. Indigenous ways of knowing and understanding of the land is critical to sustainability and stewarding the environment responsibly while moving forward with economic development. By reducing borrowing costs and unlocking access to capital, this program provides opportunities for Indigenous groups to invest in and benefit from major projects—driving local economic growth, creating jobs and fostering long-term prosperity.

"This is a significant milestone, and we look forward to seeing the program expand beyond the resource sector, ensuring Indigenous communities can fully participate in and benefit from economic opportunities across all industries. Economic reconciliation is not just the right thing to do—it is an opportunity that strengthens Canada’s economy for all."
