Small businesses are the heart of Alberta’s communities, providing beloved local spots like coffee shops, bookstores, and corner stores that make neighborhoods unique. With over 167,000 small businesses in the province, including more than 63,000 in Calgary, these enterprises represent 95% of the city's businesses and are essential to the local economy and culture.
However, affordability has become a critical challenge for small businesses, affecting their ability to grow, attract talent, and stay competitive. With rising costs, less than 10% of small businesses plan to expand, and many expect profits to decline. The Chamber urges all levels of government to create a supportive investment climate that fosters innovation, attracts investment and helps small businesses navigate financial pressures.
