Calgary Chamber welcomes agreement on Event Centre and applauds public-private partnership

Calgary, October 5, 2023 – On behalf of Calgary’s business community, the Calgary Chamber welcomes the joint announcement from the Government of Alberta, the City of Calgary, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation and Calgary Stampede announcing the plans to invest in the building of a new Event Centre, expanding and revitalizing Calgary’s Rivers District, the stampede grounds and Culture and Entertainment District. This level of collaboration is an important step forward for future public policy initiatives.

“Investments in major infrastructure projects are paramount for improving community vibrancy and attracting and retaining the talent businesses need to succeed. This in an important signal that we are investing in our collective future,” said Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “A new Event Centre will anchor our city’s entertainment district, putting us on the map for global events, further increasing opportunities for local businesses, creating jobs and growing the Calgary economy. I applaud the collaboration between government and private sector.”

The investment is critical to the vibrancy of Calgary, adding public gathering spaces, improving transportation and expanding our tourism sector, which will have a domino effect creating additional investments in the Rivers District, such as mixed-use development including housing, hotels and other amenities needed to support our growing city. We are pleased to see a quick timeline for construction to begin, understanding the significant impact a completed district will have on our communities and city. As the project advances, the Calgary Chamber encourages the partners to work with local businesses and vendors to capitalize on the economic opportunity, augmenting the local benefit. We look forward to working closely with the government and its partners to ensure businesses are top of mind.
