Calgary, April 19, 2023 – Calgary-based North Water has been named the 2023 recipient of the ENMAX Amplifier Fund, a $25,000 grant that will be used to introduce new technology to bring the business one step closer to zero waste.
North Water is a local Calgary business, owned and operated by two immigrant women that proudly call Canada home. Launching their business during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, North Water set out to help curb plastic waste by offering an alternative to the largest plastic polluter: plastic water bottles. North Water is Canada's Rocky Mountain Spring water bottled in aluminum, an infinitely recyclable material. Each vessel is crafted for 100% recyclability and harm-free hydration that you can revel in carrying. North Water is also a partner with Water First, a charity that helps bring access to clean drinking water for First Nations.
“As a company that launched as the world was crumbling with COVID, this award is a vote of confidence that solidifies we are on the right path with our values, with our goal of removing single-use plastics and to our mission of providing the world with pure Canadian Rocky Mountain water,” says Saawan Logan, CEO & Founder, North Water. “We strive to be a zero-waste company and we strongly believe that everything can be repurposed or reused. This funding helps us achieve that goal as we create a wastewater and heat recovery program for our manufacturing facility. This brings us one step closer to zero waste.”
Over the next three-to-five years, North Water’s goals include ensuring all of Alberta First Nations have access to clean drinking water by pledging $3 million to clean water initiatives, replacing plastic bottles locally on shelves across Canada with their non-plastic alternative through education and expansion, and hiring 60 more Calgarians in the next two years to sustain growth. As proud Calgarians, North Water is paving the way for the rest of Canada to showcase our country’s ability to make a change.
“North Water’s commitment to sustainability and clean drinking water for Alberta's First Nations is something to recognize and celebrate,” says Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. “The company continues to foster strong relationships with stakeholders, while offering industry-leading environmentally conscious products. The Chamber is thrilled to join ENMAX to congratulate and support the growth of North Water.”
“ENMAX is pleased to award this grant to North Water – a Calgary-based company committed to making a difference both locally and globally,” said Brandie Yarish, Chief Human Resources Officer, EVP Safety and Community Engagement at ENMAX. “We are proud to support small local businesses through The Amplifier Fund and help recipients like North Water invest further in technology and innovation, building a brighter future for our city.”
To support Calgary’s dynamic and diverse business community, The ENMAX Amplifier Fund was established to award an existing small business with $25,000 to support next-level transformation by investing in innovation, technology and leadership. Recognizing and supporting these attributes through the ENMAX Amplifier Fund is one important way ENMAX and the Calgary Chamber propel positive growth and build a brighter future for Calgary.
North Water is Canada’s purest and most revitalizing glacial water from secluded Rocky Mountain springs. North Water aims to inspire healthier communities and a healthier planet and doing some honest good.
