On March 11, the Calgary Chamber hosted our first event of the year in our Alberta Next series, focusing on Agribusiness. The event featured a keynote address followed by two insightful panel discussions that explored the future of agriculture in Alberta, the key challenges surrounding markets and labour, the advancement and adoption of new agricultural technologies and the policy measures required to support and strengthen the industry both now and for future generations.
The Calgary Chamber was pleased to welcome John Barlow, Member of Parliament for Foothills Alberta, who delivered a keynote address and participated in a fireside chat with Ruhee Ismail-Teja, Vice-President of Policy and External Affairs at the Calgary Chamber.
In his remarks, MP Barlow expressed optimism despite the challenges posed by tariffs, emphasizing the opportunities that Canada has in offering security for energy, the Arctic, critical minerals and food. He also highlighted the need to address the burdens of government regulation and taxes while stressing that leadership at all levels of government must work in partnership with industry to solve the pressing issues facing the agriculture sector.

Sowing Solutions: Navigating Market and Workforce Challenges in Alberta Agriculture
Moderated by Shannon Sereda, Senior Director with Alberta Grains, this panel featured Cherie Copithorne-Barnes, CEO of CL Ranches Ltd., Janice Tranberg, President and CEO of the Alberta and National Cattle Feeders’ Associations, and Jesse Hamonic, Vice-President and Country Head of Canada for Nutrien Ag Solutions.
Panelists discussed the impact of tariffs, labour shortages and the need for infrastructure improvements to support agricultural growth. They also highlighted the challenge of interprovincial trade barriers, stressing the importance of aligning provincial regulations to reduce trade disruptions and improve market access. Furthermore, panelists emphasized the importance of inspiring young people to pursue careers in agriculture and addressing labour gaps through immigration.
Harvesting the Future: Tech Innovations Shaping Tomorrow’s Agriculture Landscape
Moderated by Dana Gibson, Executive Director of Agriculture and Food Innovation at Alberta Innovates, this panel explored the role of emerging technologies in revolutionizing Alberta’s agriculture industry. The discussion featured Chris Terris, SVP and President of TELUS Agriculture and Consumer Goods, Marlise Hunter, Director of Platform at Tall Grass Ventures, and Ryan Wright, President and CEO of NuLeaf Farms.
Panelists highlighted the potential of AI, precision agriculture and other innovations to enhance productivity and sustainability in farming. They also discussed the importance of developing technology in Canada to meet global demand and creating customer-driven solutions that integrate with existing agricultural systems. Panelists also touched on the recognition of sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, beyond just producers, and how it is critical for all stakeholders to understand and act on its long-term impact.
Alberta Next: Agribusiness concluded on an optimistic note, with a clear focus on the future of Alberta’s agriculture sector. Exciting opportunities were explored to overcome current challenges and leverage emerging technologies, positioning the industry for continued growth and innovation.
