Mask mandate and vaccine certification are important measures to avoid lockdowns, support economic well-being

A business owners stands at their front door flipping an "open" sign

The following statement is attributable to Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce:

Calgary, September 3, 2021 – “With the spread of COVID-19 surging, primarily among our province’s unvaccinated, we urgently need measures that will help our economy stay open.

“While we are encouraged by today’s introduction of mandatory masking for indoor public spaces, we still need measures that support what businesses have been asking for: stability, certainty and a path forward to a permanent and safe reopening. Calgary businesses continue to tell us a broadly implemented vaccination certification will help keep employees, customers, patrons and clients safe, and help prevent further lockdowns.

“With evidence from around the world, vaccine certification will support safety and consumer confidence, all while encouraging those who remain eligible but unvaccinated to step forward to protect themselves and our community. Considering stagnant vaccination rates, it is one important step our province can take to help us permanently return to the things that support our collective mental, physical and economic well being.”
