As Acting Chief Sustainability Officer, Jeff ensures environmental, social and governance considerations are embedded in the company’s strategy and business plans. This includes overseeing communications, and stakeholder engagement with Indigenous communities, governments and community partners. In his role as Senior Vice-President, Corporate Development, Jeff is responsible for contributing to the company’s long-term strategy and business plan through strategic acquisitions and divestitures.
Jeff has extensive experience in domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, investments and corporate restructurings. Prior to joining Cenovus in 2023, Jeff spent 15 years at Peters & Co. Limited, in senior finance roles including Managing Director of the Corporate Finance group and as a member of the Executive Committee. Before Peters & Co., Jeff spent 14 years as a securities lawyer at the law firm of Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP (BD&P), where he was co-head of the Securities Group and a member of the Executive Committee. During his tenure at BD&P, Jeff was twice named one of the top 40 lawyers under 40 in Canada, and was recognized as one of Canada’s most creative lawyers as well as a top cross-border corporate lawyer.
Jeff has served on the board of directors at a number of public and private companies, and charitable organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta.
Rocky Vermani is the Senior Vice President, Innovation and Sustainability, responsible for building out NOVA Chemicals’ sustainability initiative roadmaps and advocating for strong policy to continue unlocking solutions for a sustainable future. Joining NOVA Chemicals in 1994 as a Process Engineer, he then assumed roles in manufacturing, technology licensing, polymer sales and marketing, olefins products business and olefins feedstock & energy acquisition.
Prior to joining NOVA Chemicals, Rocky was a Process Engineer at DuPont Canada. He earned a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Saskatchewan. He currently serves on the board of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), Resource Diversification Council (RDC) for Alberta, and is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for Mount Royal University’s business school.
Alison Jackson is the Managing Partner of EY-Calgary and a Tax Professional by trade. Alison is a champion for Calgary and Western Canada, with focus on developing and promoting the Agri-Food sector in Alberta and across Canada. Alison is a tireless advocate for the power of inclusion - driving business results, building stronger communities and helping individuals to achieve their true potential. Alison is also passionate about the economic, societal and spiritual wellness of Indigenous people in Canada, working with various organizations who share similar interest to accelerate advancement.
Alison serves on the Board of Alberta Innovates and the Advisory Council for the Simpson Centre in the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. Alison is also a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and the International Women’s Forum.
Dr. Ghada Nafie is the Co-founder and CEO of Litus, established in 2020 as a vehicle to deliver nanotechnology solutions for global energy sustainability, especially focused on the elegant recovery of battery metals. Having developed a lithium extraction solution, her research has also uncovered new techniques in nanotechnology designed to unlock lithium and other battery metal supplies to solve some of the world’s most critical energy challenges.
Dr. Ghada Nafie received her PhD degree from the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary after over a decade of global experience in industry and start-ups. Among her dozens of awards and recognition, Dr. Ghada Nafie recently won the ASTech Award for Excellence in Clean Energy, the Mission from MaRS Climate Venture Diversity Award, the Elevate Firehood Angel Investment Prize, and the Inventures Award in the Net Zero Category.
With over 25 years of experience in energy innovation and executive leadership, Kevin ascended from a roughneck on Northern Alberta's oil rigs to CEO of Canada’s oldest drilling company. As CEO of Avatar Innovations, Kevin spearheaded Canada’s premier energy technology venture studio and Alberta’s inaugural energy venture capital fund. With expertise leading to groundbreaking achievements, including Canada’s first fully computerized drilling rig and the inaugural long-reach horizontal well in the Canadian arctic, Kevin has also worked to facilitate Economic Reconciliation through joint ventures with Indigenous communities and established the Calgary Energy Transition Center.
Holding a Bachelor of Science from McGill University and a Masters of Business Administration from the Haskayne School of Business, Kevin also contributes to Energy Safety Canada's board of directors and sits on steering committees for the Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN) and the Energy Futures Lab (EFL). In 2023, Kevin was recognized as one of the “Top 50 Global Changemakers working in Canada” by the Globe & Mail Newspaper.
Torrie Turner brings a broad upstream experience set, with skills acquired through 20+ years of delivery in exploration, production, and regulation of the oil and gas industry, crossing all phases of the resource extraction lifecycle. She is a proud and passionate professional geologist, with deep subsurface domain experience and a passion for driving operational excellence. In 2019 she started a small technology company dedicated to connecting data across silos in upstream operational workflows. In her current role as Industry Executive, Oil & Gas and Mining, Americas at Microsoft, Torrie supports resource producers with driving long-term, high-value business outcomes through digital transformation initiatives to enable cleaner and affordable energy for all.
