The following statement is attributable Deborah Yedlin, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce
“On behalf of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased to see the government of Alberta follow through on its commitment to lift the pause on renewable project approvals within the promised timeframe, however, some concerns remain with the decisions announced on Wednesday.
“We recognize significant work has been completed to navigate the complexities of the renewable power sector in the province and are pleased with the focus on ensuring agricultural lands will be factored into future development decisions. However, the proposed policy changes outlined in response to the Alberta Utility Commissions Report raise serious questions about the future investment climate for renewable energy projects in the province.
“While additional details are necessary to understand the broader impact of the proposed policy changes, it is important to emphasize that developers in the province require clear guidance and certainty before committing capital for investment. Additional barriers to renewable development, such as what was announced on Wednesday, will discourage or strand investment, impacting the affordability and reliability of Alberta's electrical grid, at a time when energy security is of critical importance. We encourage the Government of Alberta to engage with industry, as well as current - and future - project proponents to understand the implications of any policy change and take the necessary steps to enhance investment certainty.”
